5th Annual South placeCentral Kansas Masters BBQ Championship
Sponsored by the Center for Health and Wellness, Inc.
Perfect weather, great BBQ teams and a large crowd to enjoy the “Wild-Wild West
Family Fun Day” and BBQ Championship held as a benefit for the Center for Health and
Wellness (host) at PlaceNameOld PlaceNameCowtown PlaceTypeMuseum grounds in placeCityWichita, KS on June 14, 2008 were the
right ingredients for a great recipe for a successful contest.
Early on Friday, June 13, the cooks started rolling in their RVs and smokers until
late that night to get their rigs hooked up to electricity, have their meat supplies checked
by the Meat Inspector and fired up their smokers for the KCBS sanctioned contest. John
Grimes and Robert Hahn, KCBS officials, were on site by early afternoon to oversee the
preparations and contest-did a great job.
Twenty-six teams competed in the 5th Annual South placeCentral Kansas Masters BBQ
Championship from the great states of StateKansas, StateMissouri and placeStateOklahoma---some first-timers
and mostly seasoned experienced BBQ teams. Two teams that had entered the contest had
to cancel because of family emergencies-so 26 teams engaged in the final competition.
Coleman coolers, lanterns, flashlights, key chains -outdoor camping products
supplied by the Wichita-based Coleman Company were handed out to the teams as they
checked-in on Friday, June 13th. Coleman sponsorship as well as other hospitality items
supplied by local merchants provided a real boost for this Wichita-based BBQ competition
-all added up to a great way to say “howdy” to these “bbq cowboys” joining us at Old
Cowtown-a historic museum honoring the pioneering Wild West Days of StateplaceKansas
and Wichita.
Wichita's Mayor, Carl Brewer, a contestant, hosted a BBQ dinner and Blues concert
on Friday night for all the cooks, their families/friends and many invited guests of the Mayor
-all who attended the party enjoyed both the tasty food (plenty of it) as well as the musical entertainment.
Saturday, June 14, was filled with family fun activities-inflatable games for the
Kids, Western strolls through historic Cowtown where folks enjoyed authentic gun-slinging
contests, seeing ladies dressed in vintage dress, examining classic cars on display, enjoying
Saloon beverages, spooning old fashioned vanilla ice cream (made on the spot), voting in the
People's Choice contest, and plenty of tasty ribs, brisket, chicken and pork as people mingled
among with the cooks. Blues/jazz bands including Back Porch Blues, Craig Twister Stewart,
placecountry-regionKent Overacre RKO Band, Made from Scratch, and Corbett Vintage Music & Sound
entertained the crowds during the day-making for a fun day for all.
Around 3:00p.m., as eager cooks and folks alike gathered around the stage area, The Award Ceremony announcer provided the long-awaited names of winners of the 2008 KCBS BBQ Championship. These winners, given awards of cash (top 5 winners) or ribbons (6th to 10th place),include:
